Computer and Electronic Scrap Recycling

Cleaning Up E-waste

CRTs and other electronic equipment can contain high levels of leachable lead and other heavy metals, including mercury and cadmium, as well as phosphorus and PCBs. Millions of dollars are lost each year by not recycling electronic and computer components. 20% of electronic equipment can be reused and 80% can be properly recycled. It takes several thousand years for a monitor to decompose in a landfill.

More than 8% of landfill content is hazardous and requires proper management. Components such as batteries and mercury switches can be recycled. State and Federal regulatory agencies have begun enforcing the "Land Ban" on CRTs. Regulatory trends are leaning toward proper management of all electronic scrap.

AERC's superior recycling services assure the following benefits:

If current disposal trends continue, the landfill space required for computer carcasses will require one acre of land dug to a depth of 3 1/2 miles (room enough to stack 15 Empire State Buildings end to end).

Guidelines for Shipping and Packaging Electronic Computer Scrap

  1. A work order number from AERC must be obtained and indicated on the bill of lading paperwork used for shipping. This will provide the means for tracking the shipment through the facility.
  2. Materials are to be packaged to avoid breakage or damage. Acceptable shipping containers would include Gaylord boxes or original boxes shrink-wrapped on pallets.
  3. Electronic scrap can be shipped by a common carrier, utilizing a bill of lading. AERC can supply and assist with the completion of the appropriate paperwork.
  4. A non-hazardous shipping label must be attached to all containers before transport. AERC can supply these materials if necessary.
